Leverage Skill and Scale

All SCL Health associates are members of a larger organization. This allows us to take full advantage of knowledge, best practices and internal experts from different care sites and system services to benefit our healing ministry as a whole. We continue to learn how different people can come together to share knowledge and skills while developing creative solutions for procedures and processes that benefit all those we serve throughout our ministry.

For example, in 2012 different teams focused on ways to improve patient safety and satisfaction. The teams:

  • Launched an initiative to more effectively manage blood products and related transfusions.
  • Uncovered a way to reduce urinary tract infections.
  • Shared best practices that reduced systemwide mortality rate due to sepsis by at least 10 percent.

At the system level, this attitude resulted in a broad electronic medical record solution and the fusion of human resources teams. While the installation of some solutions may not always go smoothly, that does not mean we give up. Instead, we redouble our efforts to fix any problems, finding ways to ensure the process works better as we move forward.

The end result is that when one associate or team has an “a-ha” moment, it can spread, solving issues at each care site. We are a chain, linked together in pursuit of the same goal.

This ability to use the talents our associates already possess helps us standardize and unify processes, eliminate duplication, realize cost savings, and enhance efficiencies across the organization. This helps us transform our health system into a trusted partner, and reinforces the standard of excellence to which we all adhere.
